A tribute from Ray Kington.
I am sad to announce that my good friend and mentor Lee Sims has passed away.
Lee was a Radio School teacher and Broadcaster.
Lee started his career at 2LM Lismore and worked at 4KQ, 4BC, 4BH, 2CC and 2SM. He was the owner of 4VL Charleville and worked in promotions in TV.
In the late eighties he started his successful Brisbane radio school in Spring Hill. In the late Nineties he was forced to close the school for a period of time having being diagnosed with Leukaemia which he beat and then restarted his radio school briefly before heading back into commercial radio in Canberra and Sydney.
In recent years he worked as the Secretary of the Cab Drivers Association as their spokesman and organiser and then at the Nundah Activity centre as the Promotions manager where he started an online radio station called Radio NAC (Nationwide Audio Connection) which was designed for the Men’s Shed organisation and once again he was training a new generation of broadcasters.
I first met Lee when he restarted the radio school and was operating out of the premises of the Ethnic Broadcaster 4EB. He was the first real radio person I had ever met and I was amazed at his knowledge and amazing voice.
During the course we became great friends and this continued for the next twenty years as I travelled around the country in radio. He always picked up the phone for a chat and some advice, to which I will be forever grateful. I was devastated when he told me the news he had cancer and that there was nothing the Doctors could do.
We kept in touch over the months that followed and I remember asking how he was doing and he said that when he didn’t answer the phone then I would know. Sadly that day came when he didn’t answer the phone.

I was just recently chatting with a friend and she asked me how I became interested in radio and it was at that point that I remembered the name Sims that was back in the late 80s early 90s where I attended several courses in relation to radio broadcast announcing and it was the greatest times of my life I had so much fun learning how to create advertisements and Reading news, I I was only in my late teens at that point and I remember him saying if you tried you could be even better he was a lovely bloke and he gave me the most amazing memories to look back on
I went to the radio school in the 90's. Lee was awesome. I came from out of town so he let me stay in a spare bedroom upstairs in the radio school until I found a place.
I never actually got into commercial radio, but I always remember Lee's frustration at his computer when typing more course material. So I ended up getting into IT instead.
Great times.
