Next chapter in the podcast phenomenon released: S-Town

The producers of the ground breaking Serial podcast have just released a new story.

John despises his Alabama town and some of the people in it. He calls it S**t Town.

John decides to do something about it, and asks a reporter to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, sparking a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life.

The aural murder mystery investigates a cover up in the town.

The show’s host is This American Life producer Brian Reed. It is produced by Serial creator Julie Snyder, with editorial assistance from Serial host Sarah Koenig and This American Life‘s Ira Glass.

The podcast follows Reed as he travels to the small town of Woodstock, Alabama, at the request of eccentric local John McLemore, who thinks he has unearthed the conspiracy.

McLemore, an antique clock restorer and a fan of This American Life, emailed Reed in 2013 in the hope that Reed could help him investigate an alleged murder cover-up.The story has been in production since then.

The murder mystery genre has been one of the big drivers of podcast audience growth. In Australia Bowraville and Phoebe’s Fall are two recent examples of award winning investigations in this documentary genre.

You can listen to the S-Town podcast here, or via most podcast platforms.
