Neil Mitchell wins big at 2007 ACRAs: Full winners list

3AW’s Neil Mitchell was one of two inductees into the Radio Hall of Fame this year, and also scooped two of the major talk radio categories, winning Best Current Affairs Commentator and Best Talk Presenter.

Mitchell, a former newspaper editor, now a radio broadcaster for the last 20 years, compared radio and newspapers, saying his favourite medium is radio because of its instant communication ability. “I will thank my audience on Monday for this award,” he said from the podium.

Speaking later in the night, Mitchell told radioinfo he also had more good news this week, his program now will be heard on more stations. After the departure of John Laws from ther airwaves on November 30, Mitchell will be networked to a range of regional Victorian stations which used to take the Laws show.

Notable winners of other categories included Jason Morrison (metro) and Greg Henricks (non-metro), who won the Brian White Memorial awards and Natalie Florence who won the Innovations and Excellence award.

Kyle and Jackie O won Best On Air Team (Metro) with other winners being Phebe Irwin and Dave Gorr and the Sea FM Morning Crew with Matt, Maree and Smithy. Non-Metro Best Talk Presenters were 2BS’ Jennifer Menchin and 2CC’s Mike Welsh.

As well as Mitchell, FM radio legend Greg Smith (pictured) was also inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Award winner and presenter Charles Wooley, a former tv reporter, said when he first began his MRWorks morning radio show he was shocked at how hard radio talk presenters have to work compared with their tv colleagues.

Peter Brennan accepting the Best PD award for his father John Brennan who was sick and unable to be at the awards, paid tribute to his father who has worked in radio for 58 years and “still has a great passion for this industry.”

The awards show was hosted by Jono Coleman with special appearances from Harry Shearer and an opening performance from the cast of Priscilla.

Congratulations from radioinfo to all the winners. Their names are below as well as some snaps of winners and party animals at the awards.
