German internship for 4ZZZ’s Lucas Moore

The current host of 4ZZZ’s “Brisbane Line” Lucas Moore has been one of a few Australian community radio journalists chosen to take part in an internship program with Deutsche Welle, run in conjunction with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA).

The program, which sees those selected flown to Deutsche Welle headquarters in Cologne, “is an example of the positive, often life-changing experiences that community radio offers young broadcasters.” When he returns to Australia, he will be “ready to bring his Brisbane audience the tools he has learned from the German broadcaster.”

“I never in my wildest dreams thought my involvement in community broadcasting would one day lead me to an internship in another country,” says Moore.

The future is one thing Moore did not think much about before he was chosen to go to Germany.

“Although I’d been told community radio was ‘good experience’ for a ‘real’ job, being young and reckless I didn’t really care for all that career stuff,” he said. “My only vision of the future laid in what program I would start making after the one I was currently doing.”

Even so, Moore is committed to his future duties at Deutsche Welle and hopes that he can bring some of the lessons he will learn there back to his audience in Brisbane.

“From my experience,” he said, “I think there’s a valuable lesson in knowing that community broadcasting is not just a stepping stone, it’s an amazing institution not only in the media, but it’s also part of the social fabric of cultures around the world.”

Even though Moore is excited to take part in the program run by Deutsche Welle,
he knows his future lies in the community broadcasting sector. “Community radio has provided me with so many things in my life: best friends, fulfilment, a sense of passion about my work, and this internship seems like a very sweet icing on a very big cake.”
