Em and Wippa stunt goes pear-shape

Last week we reported on a new competition being run on Perth’s 92.9 by their breakfast duo Em and Wippa. On the face of it, the pair were full of good intentions, bringing together long lost relatives from across the globe. How then, could they possibly upset so many listeners?

Two eligible contestants were found, Monique from Mirrabooka and her sister Erica who now lives in Ireland. The pair had not seen each other in six years. So 92.9 paid the airfare to bring Erica to Perth. So far, so good. Local Kleenex sales were brisk.
But there was a twist in the tale. To add a little intrigue, the sisters could not actually see one another unless Monique answers some questions about Erica’s personal life.

There were three questions. One correct will entitle her to have contact with Erica for just one minute. Two correct would have given them an hour and three right would mean they have won an entire week together.

Common sense would suggest that the station wouldn’t’ really tear the newly united sisters apart after just one minute, should Monique only get one question right. But she did and they did.

Listeners were outraged, inundating the 92.9 website with complaints.

Among them, KIM says, “OMG i am heartbroken….. What a way to start the day. I can only begin to imagine how hard it must be for the family!!!!
Surely there is something that can be done. PLEASE HELP THEM!!!!

This from Brad, “em & wippa, you are a disgrace. it doesnt matter that she got to stay the full week, even that isnt enough. you need to stop trying to make your show all emotional and the like cos frankly, you suck at it! you try to be funny, but your not. stop trying to be like hamish and andy who are genuinely funny and entertaining.

Nicky says, “Why were such stupid guidelines set to start with – There was always going to be a chance that the contestant may have answered none of the questions right! I’m all for a good radio comp, but come on people, wake up to yourselves!!

According to news.com.au, station management has now relented and re-united the sisters once again. This time for a long time and hopefully a good time too.
