CBAA’s focus on youth – November conference

As a sector “committed to the next generation of broadcasters,” the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) has several new endeavours just around the corner for the youth in community broadcasting.

The National Youth Media Network is a brand new CBAA initiative designed to develop a network of young people around Australia actively involved in community broadcasting and other forms of media making.

Two key activities are to take place in November as part of the National Youth Media Network:

* Speak Up! Youth Media Conference – Australia’s best young community radio makers and media gurus will be meeting up for workshops and forums plus a hands-on plenary session that develops and launches the National Youth Media Network. It will be held in conjunction with the CBAA Annual Conference in Canberra November 7 – 10.

The participants will be actively involved in a series of practical info workshops that will include special guests from SBS Alchemy, ABC Radio, noise, Octapod, AMRAP and Interface. Also planned is the formal set up of the National Youth Media Network to develop future projects such as this. It will provide resources, contacts and a network of like-minded individuals to offer increased opportunities for meaningful and positive involvement.

*The Web & Radio Project – The CBAA has found 24 young community radio makers to take part in a special project taking place at the Speak Up! Youth Media Conference. The group will learn Web development skills and produce a short pre-recorded radio piece to play at their stations and to distribute to the 300+ community radio stations around the country.

Those chosen for the project will be flown to Canberra and have their accommodation costs covered to participate in two days of professional Web development training and then the Speak Up! Youth Media Conference.

The Deutsche Welle German Internship Program is another initiative run through the CBAA and is now in the process of taking on its third round of interns. Current Community Broadcasting Online Manager Mia Lauze was the fifth Australian trainee journalist to take part in the program, and since returning she has become the host of Thought Process, an in-depth feature program on 2SER, 107.3 fm.
