Cambodian radio project seeks advice

The Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) Cambodia, is seeking advice on implementing an internet radio proposal. Australian Youth Ambassador Susan McNamara writes to radioinfo:

“To give you some background, Cambodia has been devastated by civil war over the past 30 years, and is now redeveloping. Currently, there is no independent media, and access to media services is minimal due to high levels of illiteracy and poverty.

RUPP wishes to establish the first student community/internet radio station in Cambodia. It is to be modelled on the successful UNESCO pilot program run in Sri Lanka.

When new communication technologies are put in the hands of rural people they begin to make it relevant to their lives. It provides increased opportunities for them to be included in the Information society in which eventual possibilities for e-government would occur. Based on the experiences of Kothmale pilot project UNESCO is now promoting the following global programme.

Currently there are two Australian Youth Ambassadors working in a one year placement at RUPP. The aim is to establish a student community/internet radio station in Cambodia in the next 12 months.

As an Australian Youth Ambassador, I would greatly appreciate any advice or assistance you could provide in establishing the project. We would like to know the logistic, operational and equipment requirements for establishing and running a radio station, and the costs associated with this – such as a transmitter/receiver and broadcast equipment.”

Kind Regards, Susan McNamara, Australian Youth Ambassador, AusAID
