ABC Friends planning rolling actions to support ABC

Delegates representing over 10,000 Friends of the ABC members across Australia met in Perth last weekend to discuss continuing action to support the ABC.

”The main item on the agenda was ongoing cuts to ABC programming,” said Friends of the ABC spokesperson Terry Laidler. “Without sufficient funds, the ABC is unable to fulfil its Charter obligations and cater for the diverse interests of the community.”

FABC is organizing a series of rolling actions across Australia which began with a public meeting in Melbourne. Starting on Sunday 14th October, there will be rallies in Sydney and Brisbane. Other action will follow.

”Increasingly, the ABC is unable to fulfil its role as a comprehensive broadcaster,” said Laidler.

”ABC operational funding has declined by 30% since 1985/86. The broadcaster’s funds have been cut far more than any other major area of government expenditure. The 12 per cent cut inflicted by the present government has never been restored.”

Also on FABC’s agenda was treatment of ABC presenter, Stephen Crittendon.

While the conference did not comment directly on the matter, it carried a resolution of support for the right of ABC staff to participate in open discussion and debate in all forums.
