4BC’s Brian Bury announces retirement

Brian Bury, who is currently in his 50th year of broadcasting, has informed 4BC management that he will retire from broadcasting at the completion of his current contract.

His last day on air will be Friday, 12 September, which coincides with the completion of Survey 6, 2003. The respected entertainer has been a star in Radio, TV and theatre during his lengthy career.

“I feel the time has come to enjoy some of the wonderful benefits of living in South-East Queensland,” said Bury.

“I’ve had a lovely broadcasting career and now it’s time to hang up my spurs and my Platinum Microphone – my apologies, Mr Laws! I’ve had tremendous support from the people of Brisbane, who have made my wife and I so welcome, me in particular through 4BC.”

Bury is nationally-known for his TV work on Channel Nine for almost 30 years. For more than a decade, he presented news and weather reports and the weather reports became his “star performance”. He has also appeared in major hit musicals such as Annie. As a radio broadcaster, Brian Bury is best known for his work at 2UW and 2UE in Sydney and most recently his role as host of Afternoons at 4BC.

4BC General Manager David McDonald said he reluctantly accepted Bury’s decision to retire. “But I am extremely pleased and satisfied with the rating figures Brian has achieved since joining 4BC last year. Brian had consistently out performed the recent figures that had been achieved prior to his arrival.”

“Like many other Australians, Brian has become a part of my life through TV and Radio”. David McDonald thanked Bury for the commitment and loyalty he had shown to 4BC since joining the station. He will be missed at the station, but as he is currently enjoying the best of health, it augurs well for his impending retirement to spend more time with his wife of 40 years, Margaret, and their family.
