Walkley Foundation announces the June Andrews awards

Applications opened today for a range of Australian journalism awards, prizes and scholarships, with all winners to be announced at the Walkley Foundation Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism in June.
There are 14 journalism awards and two scholarships.
Among the awards are four that have each existed for several years – renamed in 2020 to acknowledge June Andrews, a major donor to the Walkley Foundation.

Veteran reporter Sean Dorney has given his name to a $10,000 journalism grant, to be awarded annually by the Walkley Foundation commencing in 2019.
The Sean Dorney Grant for Pacific Journalism will support a significant work of Australian journalism about an under-reported issue or development in the region.

NEMBC supports new Walkley Award for media diversity

ABC Foreign Correspondent Matt Brown has won a Walkley Award for his reports from Mosul chronicling the Iraqi/Kurdish attack that liberated the city from Islamic State control.

The sounds of mortars and relentless machine-gun fire are a constant reminder of the risks Matt Brown faces to take listeners to the front line of the war against IS. From news pieces edited in the field to working contacts and investigative, shoe-leather reporting, Brown brings the war on IS home to Australians.

Finalists in the prestigious Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism have been announced at simultaneous events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

This year marks the 62nd  annual Walkley Awards. Journalists around the nation submitted more than 1,200 entries, which were judged by more than 100 senior industry representatives.

Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday November 29, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in partnership with Tourism & Events Queensland.
