NZME funds first 2015 NZ radio survey independently

NZME Radio will fully fund an independent survey of radio audiences in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, commencing shortly, to ensure that clients have access to up to date data.

It comes after the news that the first NZ survey of 2015 was cancelled by the Radio Broadcasters Association in order to look for an enhanced surveying method.

APN reports growth in radio

APN News & Media has recorded an Overall Net Profit of $15.2m in financial results released today, for the 2014 calendar year.

APN is the parent company of NZME and ARN, both of which improved their revenue from 2013.

While the Australian radio market grew 3% in 2014, ARN revenue grew 18% to $180.9m and EBITDA grew 14% to $66.5m. Its agency revenue grew 32% to $109.6m, reflecting improved 2014 ratings.

NZME Radio experienced 5% growth in revenue to $116.8m and 7% in EBITDA growth, which sits at $23.1m.

Labby joins NZME in NZ

Jason “Labby” Hawkins will join NZME in New Zealand, a part of the ZM network on its national drive team for 2015.

Labby announced he was leaving Brisbane’s B105 last week after seven years at the station.

A new country brings a new nickname for Labby who’s new drive show is titled Jase & PJ.

Mediaworks buys 27 NZ licenses

Mediaworks has secured 27 licenses around New Zealand on the same day that NZME paid $7.8 million for a Christchurch license.

The licenses cost MediaWorks $7.4 million and it aims to turn George FM into a nationwide radio brand, extend Mai FM’s footprint into 12 markets, and launch a new nationwide radio station in 2015 with its newest acquisition.

It also retained a number of key strategic frequencies for its other radio brands in the auction, which was run by The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The licences last until 2031. 

NZME outbids rivals for new licence via online auction

NZME has paid a record $7.8 million for a new FM licence on 100.1 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The licence, which had a reserve price of only quarter of a million dollars, sold for well above the reserve at 11.06am on Wednesday after robust bidding from the two leading New Zealand commercial radio companies, NZME and MediaWorks.

APN has released an information briefing to the stock exchange about the business strategy and financial performance of its New Zealand media business NZME.

NZME is in the process of transforming its print, radio, digital and e-commerce assets into an integrated media business.

The medium term objective is to maintain its total advertising market share in New Zealand of 13-14% through transitioning the revenue mix.

APN's New Zealand operation plans listing, nominates new chairman

APN's New Zealand operation, now rebranded NZME, has moved one step closer to its planned listing on the NZ stock exchange, with the apointment of a company chairman (designate).

APN News & Media Limited announced the appointment of Sir John Anderson as Chairman designate for a new company that will own the newly re-branded NZME businesses (see our earlier report).

New brand identity for APN New Zealand's radio, online and print media

The Radio Network (TRN) and APN's other media properties in New Zealand have rebranded, and will now be known as New Zealand Media & Entertainment or NZME.

The new brand was launched to unify the print, radio, digital and e-commerce brands previously known as APN NZ, TRN and GrabOne under one new overarching brand.
