Federal Budget implications for broadcasting sectors

The federal government’s delayed 2020/21 budget, released tonight, is a high spending stimulus plan that hopes to maintain economic activity long enough for Australia to come out of its covid pandemic slump.

$5.5 million put aside to save historic audiovisual material

$5.5 million has been put aside by the government over four years for the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) to support the digitisation of historic audiovisual material.
Part of the money will create the National Centre for Excellence in Audiovisual Digitisation.
The NFSA has more three million items in its collection, including a significant number of film, tape and sound recordings in analogue formats, such as magnetic tape.

Ten new titles have been inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry of sound recordings that have helped shape our nation’s culture.

The new Sounds of Australia include three of the most popular songs of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. 

From the 70s decade is You’re The One That I Want, by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, written by Australian musician John Farrar.

You can nominate your favourites, as long as they're Australian, and more than 10 years old.

These are the ultimate songs, radio programs, jingles, and others. which left an indelible impact on Australian culture and history.

The CEO of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, Jan Müller, today outlined the strategy for Australia’s national media archive into the future.

“History can only survive from the materials we preserve,” said Müller in a presentation delivered at AFTRS in Sydney.

Key priorities for the archive’s collection in the new strategic plan are to continue to have a national focus and the manage the transition from analog to digital.

Ten sound recordings with cultural, historical and aesthetic significance have been added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia collection for 2017. 

There’s Kasey Chambers in there, and John Paul Young as well… Also among this year's inclusions are the Play School theme, Louis the Fly and a song about our most famous cricketer Don Bradman.

There are now in excess of 120 sounds, including a bonus recording from Australia's Amateur Hour.

Nothing too drastic in the budget outcomes for ABC, SBS, ACMA, NFSA and AFTRS


The ABC will lose almost 50 more jobs in the next financial year, according to documents released in tonight's Federal Budget. Job cuts had already been flagged for the national broadcaster and these are presumably part of the process carried across financial years.

Cathy O'Connor's oral history added to NFSA collection

Cathy O'Connor, CEO of Nova Entertainment, has recorded an Oral History interview with Sandra Odorisio at the NFSA ( National film and Sound Archive of Australia) in Sydney.
The interview joins a range of radio industry oral histories collected over the years as part of the Once Upon a Wireless project.
