ABC Radio middle management still in the dark about job cuts

It's been over two weeks since ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie publicly announced wide ranging staff cuts within the ranks of the government broadcaster.

Ms Guthrie flagged that up to 200 jobs, mainly in middle management, would go. However it is still unclear exactly who is in the firing line.

The ABC will recognise the achievements of women this International Women's Day (IWD) Wednesday, March 8th, on all platforms.

The theme for this year's IWD is on "Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030". 

The United Nations has marked IWD 2017 with a global call to "bridge the gender pay gap" which is currently 24% globally.

AFTRS and ABC Radio announce new annual scholarship

The Australian Film Television and Radio School and ABC Radio have announced a new scholarship of $14,500 to be awarded each year for the next three years to develop Australian radio talent, with a focus on diversity.

The scholarship has been adapted from an existing, long-standing bequest to AFTRS from the late ABC broadcaster Selwyn Speight, who was the first executive producer of flagship Radio Current Affairs program AM.

Campaign launched to save Radio National music shows

A website has been created in response to the ABC’s decision to cut music programming from Radio National.
 
The site, savernmusic.com is also urging people to sign an on-line petition arguing the decision has “disastrous implications for the independent and non-mainstream music industry in Australia, and for listeners Australia-wide, particularly in remote or regional areas”.
 

ABC exits shortwave radio transmission

The ABC will end its shortwave transmission service in the Northern Territory and to international audiences from 31 January 2017.

The move is in line with the national broadcaster’s commitment to dispense with outdated technology and to expand its digital content offerings including DAB+ digital radio, online and mobile services, together with FM services for international audiences.

Radio launches streaming app with 250 commercial and non commercial stations

The Australian radio industry has come together to launch RadioApp, a new mobile app that allows consumers to live stream 250 Australian radio stations on the go.
 
It’s not quite Tinder, but you do swipe right or left to find your favourite radio stations in the list of ABC and Commercial stations from around Australia.

In a memo to staff announcing the 2017 network lineups, Director of ABC Radio Michael Mason acknowledged that some of the lineup decisions for next year would be "difficult" for some staff, with 7 jobs to be lost across the Radio Division, mostly from RN.
