HOT Fm Cairns produces mobile OB on 3G and causes much good

There was a time when landline telephony was considered high tech and ‘wireless’ meant radio. HOT Fm Cairns has proven that it kinda still does as they’ve combined today’s 3G wireless communications with an outside broadcast on the move.

For last Friday’s ‘National Walk to Work Day’, Bec from the Marty & Bec Breakfast Show walked the 15kms
from Edmonton to the HOT Fm studios during her shift to help raise awareness for the day. It also meant that by the time she got to work, she had finished for the day.

Not only did Bec walk to work, but she was also doing a ‘mobile OB’, using 3G Broadcast technology to
do the show ‘live on the road’ with the 3G Wireless Tieline Codec running off an inverter in the HOT Fm HOT Rod, and
broadcasting 48K quality audio back to Marty in the studio.

With the recent tragedies in Samoa and the Philippines, Bec and her support team also took a tin and asked locals along the way to dig deep and donate money that would be given to the Red Cross to assist with relief efforts.

The response was overwhelming, and locals gave hundreds of dollars for the cause on their way to work.

This is the second time the Cairns Media Centre has done a ‘Mobile OB’, with sister station 99.5 Sea Fm breaking ground
recently by taking listeners on a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, and Potts and Pacey doing their Breakfast Show around the streets of Cairns
with lucky listeners from the back of the newly launched Stretch Hummers in Cairns.

The codec can be run off a generator meaning stations can broadcast from anywhere there is Telstra 3G. Long gone are the days of having to run miles of telephone cable to use a codec.
