ABC announces 19 live streaming regional stations

The stations will be streamed live via mobile and online by March 2018.

Through an additional $1 million investment in local communities, from mid-March 2018, the following 19 communities will be able to tune in live to a local ABC station:

After nine years with ABC South East Radio, Ian Campbell is stepping down as regional content director as of Friday, and will leave his on-air role on March 4.

It’s a decision not taken lightly and only after months of deliberation on the radio network’s restructure.

It also follows the December retirement of fellow breakfast presenter and radio veteran of 35 years – 19 at ABC South East – Tim Holt.

ABC Regional Radio format change stirs up objections

ABC Regional Radio stations in some states are rejigging their breakfast and morning lineups to extend the breakfast show until 10am.

While the changes are aimed at better resourcing the programs, it has been interpreted by some as a cut.

radioinfo has been told there will be no job losses associated with the schedule changes, but some politicians are not convinced the changes are a good move.

New ABC division to champion regional voices

The ABC’s new regional division begins operating from today, bringing together program makers, producers and reporters from across the country to provide a unified service for audiences.

ABC Regional Director, Fiona Reynolds, said regional stations were among the first to broadcast for the ABC in 1932.

What are the implications for the current PPCA dispute?

While regional commercial stations have switched off their streaming services, the ABC plans to expanded its radio streaming to include an additional 14 regional services from July 1, ensuring more Australians will have access to radio online and on mobile.

The ABC does not currently fall under the interim scheme that is at the heart of the dispute between commercial stations and the PPCA.
