Macquarie Media profits up 21%

Despite some challenging market conditions and the absence of Alan Jones for part of the reporting period, Macquarie Media Limited has announced good financial results for the year ended June 30 2017, with profits after tax rising 21% to $17.32 million for the year.

Following last year’s merger of Fairfax Radio with Macquarie Radio, Macquarie Media has posted a 9% fall in half year revenue to $66.83 million.

This is the first full six month period of the combined groups since the merger came into effect on April 1st 2015.

At Macquarie Radio Network's annual general meeting on ratings day ysterday, Chairman Russell Tate said the merger of Fairfax and Macquarie Radio "made sense."

The merged company recorded an annualised profit after the reverse takeover of $5 million, but the results are largely meaningless as do not offer much indication of the company's future performance.

Fairfax Radio Network’s Content Solutions Division today announced the launch of an Australian media first content initiative called The 60 Second Mentor with foundation partner iiNet.
 
The mini mentoring program will feature some of the best and brightest up and coming business owners, entrepreneurs, business coaches and advisors who provide their insights and tips for business managers and owners to be more successful.

The proposed merger between the Fairfax and Macquarie radio networks has now been put on hold until at least March while the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission examines the deal to make sure that neither listeners nor advertisers are harmed in the process.

‘Sad, angry and frustrated’ 3AW listeners

In his last weeks on 3AW’s overnight shift, Andrew McLaren has been facing a barrage of calls from listeners, outraged that the Melbourne-based overnight show will be replaced with a national program, fronted by Luke Bona, from Sydney.
 
When it was announced on air this week, caller after caller complained about the decision, as one sequence of programming from the 3am hour earlier this week shows (listen below).

MRN Fairfax merger talks back on again

Fairfax Radio and Macquarie Radio Network have confirmed that are in "discussions" about a possible merger.

In two related announcements, MRN and Fairfax both informed the Stock Exchange about discussions related to a "transaction," as required by the excahnge's 'continuous disclosure' obligations. But no deal has been reached yet.
