A boost to digital radio listening in first survey

Digital radio listening has increased in the first survey for 2015 with 3.2 million people now listening  to radio each week using a DAB+ digital radio in the five metropolitan capitals, according to GfK figures released by Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) today in the DAB+ quarterly update.

Transmission expert Les Sabel told broadcast managers and engineers in Kuala Lumpur today that staying in analog transmission is a “dead end.”

Most Asian countries are well behind Australia in launching digital radio.

Sabel, a technical consultant for CRA and World DMB, was speaking at a workshop on Digital Radio in the lead up to the official opening of the Digital Broadcasting Summit tomorrow in Malaysia.

He told delegates the cost of inaction on digital radio “is that listeners will go somewhere else.”

No, according to Per Borga from Teracom in Sweden.
Speaking at the National Radio Conference, Borga outlined a study conducted in Sweden to discover whether radio broadcasting could be delivered via mobile streaming.
If Sweden turned off radio broadcast transmitters and all consumption went to the mobile network, it could not cope.

Triple M has launched a new digital radio station called Triple M Modern Rock Digital in Adelaide and Perth on the weekend.
Featuring the best modern rock from the 2000s to now, the station features the world's new generation of rock acts such as The Black Keys, the Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J and Linkin Park.

It will also champion Australia's current wave of rock acts such Kingswood, Boy & Bear and John Butler Trio.

A radio audience in the billions? That's the new benchmark, with the launch of new digital radio technology by DRM at the IBC Conference that has just wrapped up in Amsterdam for 2014.

The technology, produced in India, uses analog AM radio for digital sound and services. The DRM AM model receiver called the AV-DR-1401 - allows radio stations to potentially reach an audience in the billions, with better reach and multi-media capabilities than ever before.

Nearly 100,000 (97,177) new vehicles have been sold with a DAB+ digital radio, and digital radio listening is at an all time high with 21.4% or almost 2.8 million people tuning in each week in the five metropolitan capital cities alone. The latest figures are from official data released by Commercial Radio Australia today in the 2014 Digital Radio Report.

Cut ABC Digital Radio funding says Lewis Review

The ABC and SBS are under pressure to cut costs as a result of the Lewis Review.

Of particular interest to the radio industry is the recommendation that digital radio transmission funding be cut and replaced with more internet streaming.

Give that the cost of audio streaming increases the more listeners there are, while free to air digital transmission costs remain steady no matter how many people are listening, the review's sums may be a little off.
