ABC slashes regional allowance for WA journalists

The West Australian is reporting (subscription required) that nearly 40 ABC journalists in WA's mining areas have today been told their regional allowance will be axed, slashing up to $15,000 annually from some payslips.

Hundreds of ABC casual staff have been offered permanent positions

The Age is reporting that the ABC has offered hundreds of permanent roles to casual staff even as it prepares to make more than 200 staff redundant because of a budget freeze imposed by the Morrison government.
The positions have been offered as the ABC moves toward unveiling its five-year strategic plan, which could be as early as tomorrow.

ABC Radio has begun a process of consultation with its regional staff as the national broadcaster prepares to introduce a new regional division that will combine news, rural and regional programming staff into one area.
Some staff fear they will lose their jobs as a result of the restructure.

ABC Friends are urging the public to support the ABC by displaying a poster message anywhere and everywhere they can.

The group is asking people to download 'SOS ABC' posters to print and distribute.

ABC board member Fiona Stanley has spoken out against News Limited's campaign against the ABC in a column in today's Sydney Morning Herald.

She says the ABC finds itself in a situation where "a major commercial news organisation is denigrating the ABC with a vicious, sustained campaign which is extremely damaging to our public broadcaster and to the nation."

The ABC will lose about 80 staff resulting from the termination of the Australian Network contract.

The forced redundancies will fall mostly across the Asia Pacific News Centre and ABC International, and will have a significant effect on Radio Australia, including the axing of three RA programs.
