Daniel Hilliard

Zoo FM

My journey in radio either started when I was a teen in the 90s or 5 years ago. As a kid I fell in love with the format when I was the first caller through when hearing the opening salvo from Icehouse in Electric Blue. I started editing a 1 hour "show" in my bedroom, burning it to CD and sending it to friends. After leaving school I did a little community radio and then I discovered that sneaky beast.... a social life.

I wouldn't be in the radio industry until about 10 years later when my local station head hunted me from my retail job to sell advertising for them. I did that for about 2 years but I knew that executing the campaigns I was coming up with was where I wanted to be.

I moved to Melbourne with 2 suitcases and a computer, crashed on my mates couch in a 1 bedroom apartment and with 2 dogs for a couple of months. As I was finishing my radio course ZooFM reached out to me for the breaky shift. I actually knocked back their first offer because it was early in the course and I know education is important. Turns out everything lined up at the edge of my course and I've been enjoying the region of Dubbo ever since.

My best tip for someone starting behind the mic in radio is to get among the community. You'll get known, you'll make contacts and the community will look after you. If you're regional, put your hand up for any job. You'll learn so much and you'll be able to do just about everything a radio station needs in no time.
