This year’s ABC’s Classic 100 Countdown is all about dance

‘Music that makes you move.’

ABC Classic FM will reveal the nation’s favourite classical dance music next weekend for The Classic 100.

Beginning at 9am AEST on Saturday 9 June, The Classic 100: Dance – Music That Makes You Move will recognise dance music written across four centuries, as voted for in May by ABC Classic FM audiences.

Regular presenters Russell Torrance, Vanessa Hughes, Greta Bradman, Martin Buzacott, Christopher Lawrence, Tamara-Anna Cislowska, Damien Beaumont, Genevieve Lang, Margaret Throsby and Mairi Nicolson will host with special guests.

The Australian Ballet has produced three new works specifically for the Classic 100, which will launch online at the ABC Classic FM website over the weekend.

A new feature and podcast series, Why Dance? from ABC RN program maker Dr Ann Jones (Off Track), produced in partnership with The Australian Ballet, the Sydney Dance Company and the Bangarra Dance Theatre, will explore the world of dance behind the scenes, from the perspective of some of Australia’s finest dancers and choreographers.

“Thousands of ABC Classic FM listeners have voted in the past few weeks for the music that makes them move,” said Toby Chadd, ABC Classic FM’s Content Manager.

“And their selections are going to make for a beautiful weekend of dance – on air, online and on our social platforms; ensuring a mesmerising aural and visual experience.”

Any classical work written as dance, as well as any classical work that made audiences want to dance, was eligible for nomination.

The Classic 100: Dance begins at 9am AEST, Saturday 09 June, and continues over the weekend until Australia’s favourite dance work is revealed on Sunday evening.

To avoid spoilers, the Classic 100 Countdown will be broadcast live across Australia.
