Voices for multicultural Australia: NEMBC conference

The largest gathering of ethnic and multicultural community broadcasters will meet in Canberra on the 25th November.

Ethnic broadcasters play a key role in shaping and developing community radio in Australia, contributing to media diversity, and maintaining connections with communities, ancestry, language and culture. Each week, the sector broadcasts 2118 hours of content, in 100 languages at 130 stations.

Russell Anderson, CEO of the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council, said ‘The conference is a unique event representative of thousands of ethnic community broadcasters. It brings together government representatives, community leaders, academics, multicultural organisations, radio station managers and broadcasters from across Australia. This is an opportunity for ethnic community broadcasters to network, discuss and debate key issues that relate to community broadcasting, the media and multicultural policies.”

The theme for the conference is “Your Voice, Your Action, Our Change”. Mr Anderson said “This conference is a call to find your voice, inspire yourself to action and create the kind of change you want to see. This needs to be seen in the context of a wider global situation where social cohesion is being eroded as society becomes more polarised and multiculturalism and diversity is often under attack. In the past many racist comments were seen as being on the fringe but now extreme hateful views are becoming part of the mainstream public discourse.”
