Vale Ron Cadee – 3KZ announcer of the 1950s

Ron Cadee passed away last month in Melbourne. Cadee was a contemporary of Stan Rofe and was one of the contributors to radio’s rock and roll era and the early days of Australian TV.

The irrepressible Cadee was known as “one of the funniest fellow on the business,” a big jovial song and dance man and an accomplished pianist.

He began his career at 3YB and in 1956 moved to Melbourne’s 3KZ where he was part of the breakfast session in a segment called ‘Chicken and Champagne.’ He was also the host of the popular live show Sunday Concert.

Radio Historian Wayne Mac told radioinfo: “He wasn’t a DJ as such. His main claim to fame was hosting the popular 3KZ Community Singing program in the ‘50s. That show was eventually dumped in the late 50s to make way for one of Stan Rofe’s weekend disc jockey shows. Ron was a bit of singer rather than a jock (as we know them now). He was a personality of his time.”

After a decade at 3KZ he was sacked and then moved to television where he hosted various programs.
