Vale Peter Luck

Radio and television presenter Peter Luck has died at the age of 73, after battling cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Mostly known for his television work, Peter Luck also presented programs on ABC Sydney, when it was known as 2BL, and was regularly heard reporting from international assignments on radio news and current affairs programs.

Beginning his career at the ABC as a reporter for This Day Tonight and Four Corners, he then moved to commercial television and worked on high profile shows including Sunday, Today Tonight, Inside Edition, This Fabulous Century, The Australians, 50 Fantastic Years and Where Are They Now.

In a Sydney Morning Herald obituary Michael Idato wrote:

To young reporters, such as myself, he was the guy who, in a newsroom filled with people too important or too busy to be bothered, stopped to offer advice, to answer a question, to pass on a fragment of irreplaceable and invaluable wisdom. In a world which forgets too easily, there is an immortality of a sort in those moments.

ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie has paid tribute to Peter Luck, saying he was “a trailblazing journalist who became a role model to generations of reporters and was also loved and respected by audiences. He made a huge contribution to the ABC in his early career and remains forever part of the fabric of the national broadcaster. All ABC staff join me in paying our respects to Peter and passing on our deepest sympathies to his family.”

Former 2BL Manager Peter Wall has told radioinfo:
“Peter presented nights on 2BL. He was always full of enthusiasm and ideas and was an extremely creative broadcaster. He was a delight to have around the station and was generous in sharing his skills and knowledge with staff. Despite his success he was a most humble man. Our thoughts are with Penny and the family.”
