Vale Margaret Christensen, Alan Eager and Alma Morton

Towards the end of 2009, three radio stalwarts passed away. Radio actor and voiceover artist Margaret Christensen, ABC Radio and TV rural reporter Alan Eager, and Victorian community radio broadcaster Alma Morton all packed away their microphones for the last time in recent months.

88 year old Margaret Christensen began as a radio presenter at 4BH, where her brother was an announcer, in the 1930s. She then moved to Sydney and built a career as a radio actor in radio serials. From 1949 to 1954, Christensen played Lois Lane in the long running show Superman. She also developed a career in film acting and continued to do radio voiceover work until her death.

68 year old Alan Eager joined the ABC in 1963 and worked as a rural radio reporter for many years. He later hosted ABC TV’s Landline program on rural affairs.

94 year old Alma Morton was instrumental in founding and broadcasting on Melbourne station 3CR. In 1975, She was a delegate to the meetings that resulted in the establishment of the Community Radio Federation (3CR) in Melbourne in 1976 and for 13 years hosted the program Women’s World. In 1997 she was given her own show, Alma’s Hour, and broadcast until her 89th birthday in 2004.
