Vale Jimmy Hannan

Australian radio and TV personality, Jimmy Hannan, has passed away following a short battle with cancer.

The 84 year old had worked in Melbourne radio at 3UZ, but is best known as being one of the pioneers of television.

He appeared regularly on Graham Kennedy’s In Melbourne Tonight, hosted the musical variety shows, Jimmy, Tonight with Jimmy Hannan and Saturday Date, as well as game shows Name That Tune and Celebrity Squares.

At the peak of his career he was recording up to 13 TV shows a week and appearing on radio.

Jimmy won the Gold Logie in 1965 as Australia’s most popular personality.

His 1963 single, Beach Ball, featured the Bee Gees on backing vocals, and went to number 1 nationally.

At the age of 50 Jimmy stepped away from the limelight and retired to his farm in Bellingen, NSW, with his wife.

His daughter Emily Gillman told Nine her father had a “fantastic life” and he “passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer,” surrounded by family.
