Vale Clive Stark

Former ABC Radio Melbourne (3LO) presenter Clive Stark has passed away.

Clive started at 3LO 774 after passing an audition in the early sixties with no prior experience in radio. He spent most of his career there before retiring to 3MBS.

In keeping with his humble nature, Clive was farewelled at a small private cremation. Former colleagues are planning to get together separately to ‘raise a glass’ to Clive some time in the near future.

Friend and colleague Neil Davey (pictured above) has written this remembrance of Clive:

Clive Stark, after a distinguished career on-air with the ABC, passed away on July 31, 2017, aged 81.

Clive’s broadcasting life began in the early 1960s when he met the announcer audition requirements of a clear voice, and ability to read well and pronounce the names of classical composers.  He presented classical breakfast programs on 3AR (now RN), an early music series Baroque and Beyond, introduced recorded comedy in Stark Raving, and in the mid-80s his skills were sought by 3LO (now ABC Radio Melbourne) to host weekday and weekend programs.

As presenter of the 3LO Sunday morning Arts and Leisure Show, Clive’s diverse interests in theatre, music, galleries, literature, travel and cinema, and his affable, easy-going nature endeared him to Melbourne listeners.  An ABC management decision to terminate Clive’s career in 1993 was widely challenged by his listeners, he was reinstated, and continued to host the Sunday show through to retirement in 1997.

The ABC tweeted his passing…

As tributes flow on Facebook.

RIP Clive.
