Two big surprises for 4KQ’s Laurel’s 50th Birthday

For her recent 50th Birthday, 4KQ’s Laurel Edwards was thrown a huge surprise Countdown-themed party by her husband, country musician Troy Cassar-Daley.

Guests who joined the celebrations included WSFM’s Brendan “Jonesy” Jones and Kyle and Jackie O Show producer Abi Benaud, who both flew up from Sydney especially for the occasion – along with 97.3FM’s Bob Gallagher, her 4KQ Breakfast teammates Mark Hine and Gary Clare and 4KQ content director Barry Drinkwater.

But perhaps the biggest surprise for Laurel came in the form of a man she’d adored since she was just a little girl, the one and only Daryl Braithwaite.

Troy had organised a very special performance by Daryl, and Laurel – never one to miss an opportunity, stormed the stage to sing along while he performed “Horses” and “Rise.”

Said Laurel: “I’m still floating on a cloud thanks to my amazing husband who surprised me with not only the perfect ‘Countdown’ party but a performance by the man I have stalked and idolised since I was 7, Daryl Braithwaite!”

Continues Laurel:  “As a young girl I would sit in my satin Sherbet jacket Mum made me and stare at their album cover while playing the turntable. I would fantasise Daryl would walk up the front stairs and knock on the door.

“Even through an unbelievably busy 12 months for Troy and (Troy’s Manager) Roxanne Brown, they still worked tirelessly to throw the perfect 50th… It was a night I will never forget.”

The music was a compilation of Laurel’s favourite ’70’s songs, and guests danced well into the night donning Countdown-inspired costumes including Tony’s AC/DC, her mother’s Nana Mouskouri and her father’s Frank Sinatra.

Laurel’s parents even surprised her with a brand new Sherbet jacket, a much larger version of the one she wore when she saw Sherbet perform at Festival Hall way back in ’77.

Happy Belated Birthday Laurel, and it’s great to know that dreams really can come true!
