Twitter and Billboard team up for new charts

In a collaboration with Twitter, Billboard has released two new real time, interactive charts; Trending 140 and Emerging Artists.

Both charts track the constant “buzz” on an artist through the interactions and shares of their profile and music and will be published in Billboard magazine weekly.

Trending 140 tracks the most highest trending songs on the Twittersphere, ranking them in order as well as providing the percentage and graph of shares over time.

Emerging Artists tracks songs shared from artists with less than 50,000 Twitter followers who have not appeared in the top 50 of the Billboard 100.

Clicking on a song from the charts will allow you to either share it on Twitter yourself, or open it in Spotify, which converts each chart into a playlist.

The charts offer an alternative to the sales charts as music is being consumed and shared via free, online platforms like Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud and Facebook.

Twitter has a strong relationship with musicians with many choosing it as their ideal social networking platform as they get a greater response from their fans. In fact, 7 of the 10 most followed twitter accounts are musicians, with music being the subject of over one billion tweets in 2013.
