Triple J takes three bands bush

Triple J is planning another regional concert in its series supporting youth in country areas.

On Wednesday July 23rd, Powderfinger, Magic Dirt, and Jet will be playing in a free concert somewhere in regional Australia. The station is calling for applications from young people in towns that would like to see these bands on their turf.

Triple J listeners who want to get the bands to their town have to:

Get a letter from the town’s mayor supporting the gig; get permission from the town’s local showgrounds pledging the availability of the venue for free; get a petition going showing your town’s support and design a souvenir for the town.

The only condition of eligibility is that cities can’t enter. Entries close on Friday July 11th, with the winner announced in the Triple J Breakfast Show on Monday July 14th.

Triple J has an outstanding track record of taking bands off the beaten track, including Everclear in Benalla, and last year Machine Gun Fellatio and 28 Days in Gunnedah. The station has never taken three bands on the road in this way before.

Should Triple J reinvent itself to stay young, or should it grow old gracvefully with its existing audience? Do you have an opinion? Have your say in this week’s Forum topic.
