Triple J Christmas single reaches number 1

Christmas Number 1, the festive charity single released by triple j and the Red Cross, has made it all the way to number one on the Australian iTunes singles chart.

The song reached the milestone this morning after a groundswell of support form triple j listeners over the last 24 hours, knocking off international acts like One Direction, James Blunt and Redfoo in the process. You can keep the song at number one by purchasing it iTunes or Google Play.

Lead by song writer and triple j presenter The Doctor, the single parodies Christmas songs of the past, in a playful yet genuine effort to raise money for the Red Cross. The network hopes that it will make number one on the ARIA charts as well, so that commercial station countdowns will play it.

Joining The Doctor is a band and choir made up of some of Australia’s most talented musicians, including Phil Jamieson from Grinspoon, Elizabeth Rose, Thomas Rawle from Papa vs Pretty, Bertie Blackman, Tuka and Jeswon from Thundamentals, Joyride, Abbe May, Andy Bull, Laurence Pike from PVT, Touch Sensitive, Bree Tranter, Asta, Calum, James and Bryce from Lunatics on Pogo Sticks, B1 & B2 from Bananas in Pyjamas, Dr Karl and triple j presenters Tom & Alex, Linda Marigliano, Nina Las Vegas, Dom Alessio and Tom Tilley, who all donated their time and proceeds to the Red Cross Appeal.

Watch the all-star cast as they roll up their Christmas jumper sleeves to make the world a better place below, and check out some behind the scenes action on the Doctor’s blog.

As well as the big news about the Christmas song, triple j will say goodbye to Tom Ballard tomorrow morning, in a massive end of year party.

Content will include stand up comedy from new guy Matt Okine and old pal Sam Simmons. Ex Brekkie Producer Ollie Wards will perform his famous parody song ‘A Redneck Is Going To Kill You’ and Gareth, the Irish scallywag, will face off against Lewi McKirdy in a arm wrestle. There will also be plenty of friends of the show, including Perry Good Sports person, Ellyse Perry and Luis Yuhasz, the friendly ABC Security Guard, and of course a few surprises.
