Sun sets and makes way for new star – Shepparton StarFM

Thursday 01 June, 2006
A new star is born

Shepparton based Sun FM started broadcasting on November 10, 1990 after being granted a temporary frequency on FM 107.7, becoming regional Victoria’s first commercial FM radio station. Since that time the station gained a permanent frequency and expanded its coverage into Mount Buller. This week it changed its name, becoming the latest 'Star' in Macquarie Regional RadioWorks' galaxy.

Following the success of the initial broadcast Sun FM found its permanent home at 96.9 megahertz on the FM dial where it has been for almost 16 years. In 1995 following a number of enquiries, a translator service was established to provide coverage to Mansfield, Mt Buller & the High Country celebrating 10 years on air in 2005.

In November last year Sun FM joined regional radio company Macquarie Regional Radioworks.

Today it joined with other StarFM’s in the network becoming Nvarchar(15)y Six Nine – Star FM.

Speaking on air during the relaunch, General Manager Leanne Hulm told the breakfast crew, Billy & Mindy they would still have a job with the new Star: "You're our first stars," she told the listeners.

Hulm says: “As part of Australia’s largest radio network, ‘Macquarie Radioworks,’ we now have access to resources that we could never have dreamed of having as the SUN FM brand. This is a very exciting time for our station and it’s listener’s as we now have much more access to better quality programming, resources and production.”

Long time employee, General Sales Manager Robbie Schischka officially launched the new name. To hear the launch audio, click below (mp3 5.5 Mb)
