Seize the day and fry July

Every Program Director asks their breakfast team “How did you seize the day?” This morning Craig & Mandy and the Star 104.5 seized the last day of the month to do something they should have done 30 days ago.

In their 5.20 planning meeting, news reader Glen Lauder reminded the guys that it was the last day of July and a lot of people would be finishing Dry July.

But Craig & Mandy hadn’t even started.

When Craig & Mandy realized that all Dry July money raised was going to the Central Coast’s local hospitals they decided it wasn’t good enough that they hadn’t jumped on board.

So, at 5.30am, Star 104.5’s Integration & Marketing Manager Cassie Grentell received a very unexpected phone call from Craig & Mandy. Cassie was given 30 minutes to organize ‘Fry July’ – a breakfast cook-off.

By 6.40 the RFS had jumped on board the ‘Fry July on the Fly’, bacon, eggs, bread and sauce had been donated and the first sausage served.

The guys resolved to stay on air until they’d raised $1000, because without a good result, everyone they’d woken up would be furious.

The support was overwhelming, school kids donated their pocket money, truckies who’d heard what was going happening on the M2 and made the 90 minute trip to be a part of it, a local mother and cancer survivor even called into the station and recorded her story with the guys on the panel.

After reaching the $1000 milestone just after 8am, Mandy gained support from Dry July co-founder Brett McDonalds that if they raised $1500 that Craig would have to go for a swim in Brisbane Water in the freezing rain!

Just on 9am Craig took the plunge and the Star 104.5 team had raised just over $2000 in less than 3 hours.

Just goes to show what a team effort can achieve and how easy it REALLY is to seize the day and turn something round when we use the airwaves for the power of good.
