SBS faces same problems as ABC

This week it was announced that Gerald Stone has been appointed as Deputy Chairperson of SBS and that conservative columnist Christopher Pearson has been appointed as a non-executive director of the Board of the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS).

Commenting on the appointments, Friends of the ABC spokesperson Glenys Stradijot said:

“Not content with having stacked the ABC Board with its sympathizers, it appears the Federal Government is moving on SBS.

“Public broadcasters provide an important service to the community. Governments of all political persuasions must be prevented from seeking to misuse them.

“It’s time governments learnt that public broadcasters are not meant to be their mouthpieces or used to reward political allies.”

Friends of teh Abc believes SBS is facing the same problems as the ABC. And the solution is the same according to Friends.

“Australia urgently needs a system, similar to that introduced for all public bodies in the UK, which requires board appointments to be made on merit,” says Glenys Stradijot.
