Sammy Power, feeling fit at fifty

Former Mix 106.5 breakfast presenter Sammy Power has told radioinfo “it’s just been a crazy week,” after the huge coverage of her ‘wedding.’

After a year of losing weight and getting fit, Sammy celebrated her 50th birthday with an unusual wedding – she married herself. A cardboard cut-out of her former ‘fat self.’

Sammy worked at Triple M, on breakfast at Mix 106.5 and at Wave FM, before moved back to Queensland to work with her mother, Jan Power, in her Farmers Market business.

The ‘wedding’ was her way of celebrating a positive change in her life, after giving up smoking and drinking and losing half her body weight in the past year. She hosted the party for 120 guests at The Boathouse in Noosaville, but the coverage of the party has surprised her.

“I didn’t ask for any of this..and was unprepared,” she told radioinfo. She says she feels “mentally clear” and is no longer spending so much time thinking she is fat and “obsessing over small things.’’

Going home, sober, after the party she says, “I thought to myself, you’re pretty great… Yes, I’m going home alone but when the right person comes along, they are going to be with someone pretty amazing. I’m ready to meet the right person.”

Sammy handed out trophies to those who played an important role in her life. “I married myself, it was about accepting yourself and just loving yourself.”

Walking down the aisle, the stunning bride arrived with a chorus of ukeleles playing ‘Tip Toe through the Tulips.’

Will Sammy return to radio now she has turned her life around? “I’d like to expand the Jan Power’s Farmers Markets brand and I would like to expand my brand without expanding my body,” she says.
