Revenue Boost for Community Radio in Queensland

Queensland’s strong community broadcasting sector received a boost this week with the
announcement that I&G Media has opened a Brisbane sales office.

I&G has appointed Noel Niddrie as Director of Sales for Queensland. He has a
communications degree and a strong background in community media. Previous
positions include senior roles in Queensland radio stations – as Program Manager and
News Director in the Indigenous broadcasting sector (4AAA), and Sales and Marketing
in non-English language broadcasting (4EB).

I&G Media has been the national sales representative for community radio stations since
1994. “The Sydney office has been responsible for a multi-million dollar injection of new
funds into the community media sector.”

The initiative to add a Brisbane office, follows
I&G’s successful expansion into Melbourne, in 2000.

I&G Director Lee Hubber told radioinfo: “The bottom line is that the revenue needs of radio stations are greater with increased
media competition. Queensland has a large economy and fast-growing population.
Community radio stations throughout Queensland should have the opportunity to
participate fully in that economy. I&G can help by providing vigorous sales
representation in the state capital.”

Early indications are positive for the generation of revenue, at least 130,000
Queenslanders listen to a community radio station each week, and Queensland attracts
16% of the community radio audience nationally (Roy Morgan Research).

“It’s not just about the size of the audiences for community radio. There is the
recognition by communities that clients are supporting local services. The past two years
have seen a rapid expansion in the number of community radio (and TV) stations
available in Queensland. Community radio offers more than 40 local points of presence
for communities in Queensland,”
says Hubber.
