Resources for First Nations media sector support vulnerable communities

Monday 06 April, 2020

The critical work of First Nations Media organisations in producing and distributing accurate and appropriate information during the current pandemic will be strengthened thanks to a funding boost from the Federal and Northern Territory Governments.

This will give the organisation nearly $300,000 in extra funding and FNMA CEO Catherine Liddle said that would support more than 25 organisations on the ground to produce messages with relevance to their communities. "First Nations media around the country continues to produce and broadcast important information for our communities about staying safe and being healthy."

Ms Liddle said, "Our industry members are the experts in getting information to communities in a way that is culturally appropriate, accessible and timely.

"The First Nations media sector has been working enormously hard to ensure communities are kept informed of the evolving situation and latest health and safety advice.

"Some brilliant resources have been produced for radio and television broadcast, social media and in print. This extra funding will support this work to continue.

"First Nations Media Australia has not only secured the sector this additional funding, we continue to support our members by developing extra resources.

"We have created a new page on our website especially for media organisations to easily access the messages that are coming out from Government and other authorities at covid19.firstnationsmedia.org.au

"This is a one stop shop for material that can be used for broadcast, for social and print media and to support our members during what is a challenging time for us all.

"We are also running webinars to support our members to keep their organisations healthy and meet some of the issues facing businesses and not-for-profits so we have healthy First Nations communities and media organisations at the other end of this current crisis."
