Regional Surveys released

The major regional market radio surveys were released today for the Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Albury/Wodonga markets. Share figures for each market are below.

The main commercial players in these markets, DMG and RG Capital, both had good news to celebrate with the figures, as did ABC Radio.

DMG Radio’s HOT, Star and Heritage brands “won three of the four market surveys covering the North Queensland and Albury regions,” while RG Capital stations showed “clear domination in the radio stations target markets,” according to the two companies.

While there were many promotions preceeding and during the survey periods, the two most notable were River Albury Jamie McDonald’s promotion where drought stricken farmers could win tank fulls of water, and Barry Keohane’s “Marry Barry” promotion in Townsville.

ABC Radio’s share grew in all markets. With ABC local radio operating on more than one frequency in the survey areas, the “Other Local ABC” category reflects any other frequencies on which the local services can be heard.

RG Capital

“In Cairns SEA-FM dominates the target of 18-39year old and also 25-54.

In Townsville both MIX106.3 and SEA-FM have shown enormous growth with SEA-FM now clear leader in 18-39.

Mackay’s result shows another strong showing for SEA-FM dominating the 25-54 and important 25-39 demographic across the day and in Breakfast.

In Albury-Wodonga we have seen the continued strength of 105.7 The River winning not only 10+ all people but importantly its target of 25-54 convincingly.”

RG Capital’s Group Program Director, Rod Brice told radioinfo: “This result confirms our philosophy of quality live and local radio. When you consider we have been in all these markets, it’s great to see the strong local connection we have made in such a short time”.

RG Capital Radio’s Managing Director Rhys Holleran said:
“This result is a great reflection of our staff’s tireless efforts and this company’s confidence in these growth regions. Our improved figures will mean advertisers can invest in our business with even greater confidence”.

DMG

“In Townsville DMG’s 4TO is No. 1 by a huge margin and the DMG combination of 4TO and Hot.FM clearly leads in that market and the combined result is replicated across all markets.

Cairns saw DMG placed first and second with Hot.FM No. 1, 4CA.FM No. 2.

Mackay was similar with DMG’s Hot.FM No. 1 and 4MK.FM No. 2.”

In Albury DMG’s Star.FM won its under 40 target but The River was No. 1 10+. The combined DMG audience in Albury, Star.FM plus 2AY, saw DMG win the corporate battle in that city.

DMG Regional Radio Managing Director, Rob Gamble, told radioinfo he was ecstatic with the results: “Our combined station results show we have the top stations in every market. We have so much talent throughout our 60 regional stations and today’s results in our major markets reflect exactly that – it’s a real credit to the calibre of our staff within the regional DMG group.”

Gamble also confirmed to radioinfo that its new Sunshine Coast station will be on air before year end and the Central Coast station will follow shortly after, “further adding to the size of this rapidly expanding media group.”

ABC

“ABC Far North has increased its’ share of the Cairns Radio market by 2.1% to capture third place overall.

Breakfast with Anne O’Keeffe gained a 22.6% share putting her a close second in that timeslot behind HOT FM. The figure for all ABC in the region which includes Radio National, Triple J and Classic FM is a very healthy 24.6%.”

“The survey confirms that 630 ABC North Queensland is the number one station for listeners aged 55 and over with nearly 40% of the market.

The station also recorded one of it’s best ever results in the Breakfast, time slot, presented by Michael Clarke. The shift recorded an overall share of 20% to be the second highest rating Breakfast program in the highly competitive Townsville market.

630 ABC North Queensland also performed strongly at weekends recording an overall share of nearly 16%. The figure for all ABC in the region, which includes Radio National Triple J and Classic FM, is a very healthy 19.9%.”

“ABC Far North has increased its’ share of the Cairns Radio market by 4.8% to hold 4th place overall.

Breakfast with Jason Hagen gained a massive 6.1% giving him an overall share of 16.1%, a close third in that timeslot. The figure for all ABC in the region which includes Radio National Triple J and Classic FM is a very healthy 25.6%.”

Manager of ABC Local Radio in Queensland, Mike McGowan, is pleased with the results from the three Queensland regions. He told radioinfo:

“ABC Far North operates several transmitters in the Cairns listening area and this survey has captured the total share for all our listeners for the first time. In our target audience age group of 55 years and older we are number one with 24.6% share of the listening audience, which is a tribute to the professionalism and dedication of local Manager Anna-Lise Murch and her team.

630 ABC North Queensland is undergoing change at the moment yet it still captured the lions share of its’ target audience and held its overall 3rd position in the market.

ABC Tropical North operates on four transmitters in the Mackay listening area and this survey has captured the total share for all our listeners for the first time. In our target audience age group of 55 years and older we hold a whopping 40.4% share of the listening audience, which is a tribute to the professionalism and dedication of local Manager Craig Widdowson and his team.”

Head of ABC Local Radio Michael Mason said: “We are delighted with the results across Queensland and in
Albury. It is reflection of the hard work our program teams put into making radio that is central to the lives of their communities.”
