The finalists in the Brian White Scholarship have been announced today by Commercial Radio Australia.

The eight student finalists will attend a news workshop in Sydney where final judging will take place to award the inaugural scholarship recipient. 
 
The Brian White Scholarship offers aspiring journalists an eight-week paid work attachment, consisting of two weeks each at Macquarie Media, Southern Cross Austereo, Australian Radio Network and Nova Entertainment.
 
Students and recent graduates from around Australia submitted their applications and commercial radio news directors and their respective teams, judged the students as finalists from an audio and written application. 
 
Finalists are Eleanor Harrison-Dengate, Rachel Storer, Tys Occhiuzzi and Sam Koslowski from New South Wales.  Kate Lambe, Lucy McLeod, Rebecca Maynard from Western Australia and Bryce Heaton from Queensland.
 
The eight finalists will attend a workshop at Nova in Sydney next Tuesday (23 May) with news directors; Deborah Clay (ARN), Michelle Stephenson (Nova), Erin Maher (MMR) and Natasha Jobson (SCA) putting the students through their paces with a series of radio news room focused tasks to help determine who will be awarded the scholarship opportunity.
 
Joan Warner, chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia said: “The industry is investing in the future of radio journalism by exposing students to the leading radio newsrooms in Australia.  Live and local radio news is produced throughout Australia 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the scholarship offers the chance to learn in this fast-paced environment.”
 
The scholarship is named after radio broadcaster Brian White, commercial radio’s first cadet journalist, who went on to cover wars in Vietnam and the Middle East, authored a book on politics and the media, served as general manager of 3AW in Melbourne and chaired the Fitzroy Football Club.
 
The winner of the scholarship will be announced week commencing 29 May.  The winner can choose to serve the work placement in either Sydney or Melbourne commencing in June, with travel and accommodation included if they live outside these cities.
