The Radio Awards acceptance speeches you didn’t get to hear

Unlike the Logies or the Academy Awards, there are no acceptance speeches at the Radio Awards for the sake of brevity. But if you did have something to say for your acceptance speech, radioinfo is giving you your chance to be heard.

This year’s event ran very smoothly and was one of the slickest presentations in many years, and it was all over in enough time for dinner and a dance afterwards. The winners are listed in detail in our earlier story.

What would they have said if they were given their 60 seconds of fame in front of their peers? radioinfo would like to find out.

If you were a winner please send your ‘acceptance speech’ to us and we will publish it for you. Send to [email protected].

Some winners already contacted by radioinfo have sent us their acceptance speeches:

Mitch Smart, Zoo FM Dubbo – Best Achievement in Production (country)

“This is a bit of a childhood dream really. I’ve come to realise that my biggest lesson in production came from ‘The Castle’ – it’s all about the Vibe. My production computer flashes that message at me in every mode that it’s in. I’ve loved the challenge of trying to build stationality with the way you package core messages. I love Dubbo and I think that goes a long way towards producing great stuff. Oh, and never let perfect get in the way of better.”

Ian Crouch, 2HD/NEW FM Newcastle – Brian White Memorial (provincial)

“I remember listening to the late great Brian White when I was growing up in Sydney and dreaming of working in radio news…and to win an award named in his honour is truely awesome!

I’d like to thank all the team at 2HD, particularly AARON KEARNEY, who was on air that afternoon when we had our ‘mini Canberra’, and dropped everything to go full tilt with the bushfire coverage, and SHANNA CLOUGH in the newsroom, who worked like a trooper to bring it all together for both 2HD and NEW FM News.

I’m extremely proud to win this award for 2HD and NEWCASTLE”!!!

Justin Kelly, 2GB – Brian White Memorial Award (metro)

“It was a great thrill to win such a prestigious award on such a big night for the industry. It was even more satisfying, given I actually don’t get out ‘on the road’ to report all that often. I’d like to thank everyone in the 2GB newsroom for their hard work and dedication… and for letting me ‘off the chain’ every once in a while.”

David Gillies, Power FM Muswellbrook – Best Music Personality (country)

“I’d like to thank everybody who helped me over the last year – AFTRS and all the people who taught me there. Since coming to the industry our PD Joel Gosper has been a big influence making me the announcer I am. My advice for new people getting into the industry is – accept every opportunity as a challenge and give it 100%. One year doesn’t make a career, so now it’s back to the grind stone.”

Jamie McDonald, The River Albury – Best Community Service Project (provincial)

” Thank you for this, it’s a great honour. I started a simple idea to help people through Christmas time with Water to their drought affected farms, which we called Water For Christmas. I had no idea the project would become as big as it has. I would like to thank all the people across Australia who helped by donating money. We managed to make a great difference to over 350 families…. We will of course continue if it is needed and we as a local radio station remain committed to our community.”

Kerry Peters, The River Albury – Best Newcomer On air (provincial)

“Wowww!!! How bloody exciting!!! I haven’t won an award since grade 5, for best humanities project!!

A big thanks to R G Capital for giving an old show girl a go, but mostly to my on air partner and gorgeous husband (Jamie) for not only showing me the ropes and teaching me every aspect of radio on air and off. But also for this beautiful bub growing inside me.”

Melanie Lindquist, NX/KO FM Newcastle – Best Promotions Director (provincial)

“NXFM and KOFM have a brilliant Product team that know that great product comes from putting the listeners first.
Thanks to the team of Mike Byrne, Mike Duncan, Derek Bargwanna, Belinda Soorley, Sarah Chin, Mark Brewer (Doogie) and Belinda Starke.

It is incredibly rewarding to work for a company that understands the value of great radio and the financial rewards that come from it. It is also good to be trusted when you walk into a meeting as PMD with a crazy
idea like “Who Wants to Marry My Mum” and we agree to run with it! Thanks!”

Lisa Robinson, B-ROCK Bathurst – Best Promotions Director (country)

We have a fantastic team at our stations and I wouldn’t have won this Raward without the support of our whole team. My special thanks go to Ron and Stephanie Camplin for being wonderful, independent bosses and friends
and to Phil Cole our GM, I couldn’t have done it without you.

Thanks for allowing me to work in this exciting industry and thanks radioinfo for the chance to make a small speech.”

More ‘acceptance speeches’ will be added to this story as they are received.
