The price of fame

Comment by Kim Napier

Motivated by Sam Frost I went to write this story about working in the media and realising the fact that not everyone is your fan.

For most people, working in radio is a dream job UNTIL you are on the receiving end of trolls.

This morning on 2DayFM Sam Frost addressed a tweet she sent which had family, friends and work mates worried during the recent survey break.

“To the fake accounts heavily trolling me online and into my personal life. If you wanted to break me. Congratulations you have won. #broken”

But my experiences with “keyboard warriors” was nothing like Sam’s.

At the height of the Kim and Dave Show on Heart 107.3 in Hobart someone started a Facebook page “Get Rid of Kim and Dave”, that actually had followers! So we joined the page and suddenly it wasn’t as fun for the people trying to cut us down and hence the site disappeared.

Someone once tried to punch Dave in the betting ring at the Hobart Cup because he was caught on a Crazy Call that made him feel stupid.

And we also received this gem in the post.

At the time it feels horrid.

But this morning Sam addressed the tweet and the reason behind it and suddenly I had no idea of what it feels like to be trolled.

Without quoting Sam, just take a listen, it left a real pit in my stomach.

If you or someone you know is in crisis and needs support call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Also, most workplaces offer counselling as part of their duty of care.
