News podcast demand grows, but music declines: Podtrac

Podtrac have released their weekly US podcast data for the week of May 4 – 10, showing only a slight increase of audience numbers over the previous week.

The week was flat for downloads and up 1% for audience, but since January this year weekly downloads have increased by 25% and audience is up by 9%.

On a monthly basis, average downloads for the Top 10 US Publishers were down 6% in April over March, but still up 3% from January 2020.

Podtrac measures thousands of podcast publishers and podcasts, including those listed on their monthly rankings, and over a billion downloads and streams a month.

US downloads for 8 of Podtrac’s Top 10 publishers were lower in April than March, and to date this year the average monthly downloads for each publisher in the Top 10 is higher than in any month of 2019.

Year to date growth in the top podcast categories is 69% for News, 23% Comedy, 20% Business, and 16% for Sports through the week ending May 10.

At the other end the categories that have suffered are -32% for Music, -5% for Education and -6% Society & Culture, while Religion and Spirituality, Fiction, Arts and Leisure have flattened out
