1233 ABC Newcastle Breakfast program number one in the market
The 1233 ABC Newcastle Breakfast program, hosted by Aaron Kearney has emerged as number one overall in the market following today’s release of the GFK survey results.
This result saw the program increase by 2.2 share points to 18.3, ahead of close rival KOFM on 17.5.
1233 ABC Newcastle Local Content Manager, Phil Ashley-Brown is thrilled with the result.
“This is great news for the station and particularly for our breakfast team. It was also pleasing to see our other programs have done well.”
“It has been a challenging six months since the budget cuts, but the team has worked hard to deliver strong local content to our audiences, so this is an especially pleasing result.”
The station maintains its position as number two overall in the Newcastle market
The fact that the ABC did so well is more a reflection of the poor state of commercial radio in Newcastle. So it's not that ABC has gained listeners, it's more that the commercials have lost listeners to the morning TV shows and online sources of entertainment. So the shares just reflect that the ABC now has a larger proportion of a dwindling and insignificant market.
Also, Aaron Kearney only airs until 7:45am, so can't take credit for the whole Breakfast shift which is given a big boost by the AM Program.
Huge fall for NXFM at Breakfast - the old morning crew regularly topped 20% in their day. And look at 2HD - at one time David and Tanya topped 30% in that slot. Very sad for a once proud heritage station.
Even more telling is that 23% of Newcastle radio listeners tune to a non-surveyed station. Most of them are likely 2NURFM listeners.
