The Melbourne Radio School has relaunched its brand to better reflect its role in training talent for the radio industry. From now on, it will now be known as the Radio Training Institute (RTI).
RTI will also launch a new advanced careers course next year for people aspiring to work in radio.
The renaming signals a wider industry focus for the institute, which wants to help Victorians build their skills and get good jobs in any radio network.
“People wanting to be trained in Victoria for a professional career in radio had nowhere else to go after the Australian Film Television and Radio School closed its Melbourne Office and Swinburne dropped its Commercial Radio Course. We want to rectify that and let prospective students know that they can get high quality training right here in Melbourne from our Radio Training Institute,” said ACE Radio CEO Stephen Everett.
The Radio Training Institute is owned by the ACE Radio Network, but the expansion of the training institute is for the benefit of the whole radio industry.
“Our ACE Radio stations are always glad to be involved with the students, but there is a big wide radio world out there and so many stations need talent that we will work with all the networks to offer well trained students who will make good employees for any radio network. That’s good for the industry and good for the students,” said Mr Everett.
RTI engaged former AFTRS Director of Radio Steve Ahern to develop a new syllabus which will cover announcing and presentation, production, sales, promotions, news, interviewing, social media, digital radio and streaming, copywriting and all the important core skills needed for employment in today’s radio industry. Ahern will head the institute’s Academic Board and will be involved with teaching and student mentoring.
