Music to the ears of RTI students

Students in the full time Advanced Radio Course at the Radio Training Institute this week learnt about music directing from RCS expert Mike Pfeiffer.

The twelve students are now in their 4th week of classes and have already had guest lectures from CRA’s Joan Warner, radioinfo’s Steve Ahern and Pfeiffer, amongst others.

The six month course, delivered in Melbourne, prepares the students for professional careers in the commercial radio industry, equipping them with a range of skills including presenting, producing, audio engineering, reporting, music scheduling and programming.

Asked what she had learnt about music scheduling this week, student Brittany Austin said: “I’ve learnt how to program. I now understand the importance of good, tight programming in creating a station that matches it’s branding.”

Paul Semertzidis told radioinfo: “I have learnt plenty, the whole idea of the clocks and the music schedule was very surprising to me. I didn’t realise the amount of work and thought that goes in to everything. I look forward to applying that new knowledge in the future.”  Colleague  Paul Makin said: “Music scheduling is critical for keeping listeners wanting more.”

Adam Kaplan was surprised at how easy to use that music scheduling software is: “Looks complicated on first view but once it’s explained it’s pretty simple.”

Tim James commented that he got “great insight from Steve Ahern and Mike Pfeiffer from RCS on everything behind the science of music programming.”

And what did student Darcy Thompson learn? “What I’ve learnt about music programming…’F10 it.’
