Murdoch not selling Nova despite what the AFR says

A spokesperson for Lachlan Murdoch has told radioinfo that the Nova network is definitely not for sale.

Speculation on a sale was ignited again today by an article in the Australian Financial Review’s Street Talk column that pondered whether News Limited and Channel Seven might work together on acquisitions.

In the article was this line:

Stokes has kicked the tyres of every radio network in the country and – despite his denials – Murdoch has allowed bankers to sound out the market on his behalf.

Murdoch’s spokesperson John Connolly told radioinfo, “this is simply not true.”

He referred us to statements from Murdoch when this was raised back in June, where he told AFR reporter Jake Mitchell on the record in writing “Jake, There is absolutely no truth to this story.”

Readers may recall that Murdoch sent an email to Nova staff strongly denying “reports in Fairfax Media newspapers that he is selling media company Nova Entertainment, the owner of the nation’s No 1 FM radio network.”

Murdoch also accused the publisher of being driven by an anti News Limited “agenda.”

radioinfo also spoke to the AFR’s Jake Mitchell today and asked him if there was an agenda against his company’s competitor News Limited. He said there was no agenda and that he was confident in his sources. He declined to discuss his sources with radioinfo.

We asked Mitchell whether the line in today’s article reflected some new information.

He told radioinfo: “I was referring to the prior article, I have no new information.”
