Melbourne net station near launch

A new youth internet radio station is about to launch in Melbourne.

Melbourne 961 Net Radio will go to air for the first time on January 16.

Station Audio Engineer and Weekend Jock Brendan Ferguson told radioinfo:
“We are a 24 hour a day internet radio station located in Melbourne. Our format consists of 80’s 90’s and today’s new music, and a few surprises!”

He says the new radio team decided to start Melbourne 961 because they wanted to offer Melbourne and the world “a different type of radio than what was currently being offered on the FM dial.” Their plans are “to have a format that everyone can tune in and enjoy. No matter what the age.”

“We will also on selected nights have specialty formats, where for example Friday nights is all dance until am Saturday morning,” says Brendan.

“During the day we will have normal programming with youth DJ’s doing popular time slots like breakfast and drive time, to give them the feel for what it’s like.
We also offer youth programming for youths that really want an insight into radio.

“Not only will Melbourne 961 be producing and broadcasting local programming, we will also be taking networked shows from other countries – for example we will be taking a show from the UK called UK Connection as part of our Friday night dance mix.

“Melbourne 961 will also have lots of skilled staff members, some that have been in the industry before working with other stations… and some new fresh up and coming local talent.”

The station’s website features a Windows Media based audio stream allowing listeners to listen either via there web browser or there local media player. The site will feature DJ profiles, bios and a full program guide.

Melbourne 961 will not only cater for dial-up users, but will also offer a high quality stream for users on broadband, so that they can enjoy the benefits of high speed Internet.

“At the moment Melbourne 961 only operating out of a small studio, but in the coming months we will be constructing a larger studio,” says Ferguson.
