Melbourne AM radio changes

The usual game of musical chairs is still being played out in Melbourne AM radio, with rumours of further changes imminent in the next few weeks.

Rumours continue that Stan Zemanek will move back to Sydney with Southern Cross, leaving a gap in 3AW’s drive program. Contenders rumoured to fill that spot if Zemanek leaves include Nick McCallum and Steve Murphy.

In 3AW management moves, Graham Mott has recently been promoted to a higher corporate role as General Manager Southern Cross Broadcasting – Radio, leaving the position of General Manager 3AW to be filled. Some rumours suggest Shane Healey, who recently moved back to Melbourne after General Managing Southern Cross’ Perth stations, may be a contender for that position. Mott also had the role of Group Program Director for Southern Cross talk stations, a role which may also need to eventually be filled.

At 3AK, the station is now looking for a new morning presenter to replace the sacked Derryn Hinch. The Christmas lineup may provide some potential talent, including former highly rated 3LO broadcaster Terry Laidler.

At ABC774 former breakfast presenter Lynne Haultain will not return to the breakfast shift after taking maternity leave. She will be replaced by Red Symons, who filled in for her during her time off. Symons got a hammering from 774 listeners in the influential letters page of the Green Guide recently when this was mooted, but management has withstood the criticism.

Michael MacKenzie from ABC Darwin is being mentioned as a possible replacement for the 774 evening show, when Peter Clarke leaves the shift next year.
