Macquarie Media discovers underpayment of subcontractors

Macquarie Media has discovered it has not been paying some subcontractors their superannuation entitlements and is in the process of contacting those affected.

The Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act says a person who is paid to perform services in, or in connection with, the making of any film, tape or disc or of any television or radio broadcast is an employee for superannuation guarantee purposes.

A Macquarie Media spokesperson said, “Following a review of systems and processes to optimise operations nationally, Macquarie Media discovered a process oversight, whereby some individual contractors were not paid their superannuation entitlements.

“We are now working to correct this oversight and are committed to making this right. We will ensure identified contractors are paid their superannuation entitlement, which includes interest.

“This was not a deliberate error – contractors were paid the full amounts they invoiced but had not invoiced for superannuation and this was overlooked by our processes. We have put in place new processes to prevent this from occurring again.”

Upon discovery of this oversight, the new owners of Macquarie Media, Nine Entertainment, engaged external advisors to commence a thorough review and has advised the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
