Macca’s epic Say G’day tour comes to an end

Tuesday 29 April, 2008
Parked at Port Macquarie NSW, Macca attracts the locals

It may not rank with a Rolling Stones’ world tour but last week, ABC Local Radio’s Australia All Over presenter, Ian “Macca” McNamara and his producer Lee Kelly returned to Sydney after their epic and rather exhausting Say G’day Tour of some 54 remote and regional locations in the eastern states of Australia.

Macca and Lee traveled a total of 12,227 kilometres in 68 days through flooding rains, drought and even snow in Tasmania! They met some 4,000 people via official get togethers which were coordinated by ABC Local Radio stations, the Country Women’s Association and local community groups. They met thousands more through unofficial meetings, roadside stops and coffee breaks. At Goombungee in Queensland, more people attended a get together with Macca than actually live in the town!

The Say G’day Tour was designed to provide a unique forum for rural and regional communities to show us exactly what makes them tick. It aimed to connect with people in communities large and small – to tell their stories - what makes their town special and what makes families stay on and work together.

The journey was funded by the ABC Development and Regional Production Fund.

The official stops were at:

QUEENSLAND - Toowoomba, Goombungee, Mundubbera, Gayndah, Biloela, Jambin, Emerald, Alpha, Barcaldine, Ilfracombe, Longreach, Isisford, Charleville, Augathella, Blackall, Tambo, Cunnamulla

NEW SOUTH WALES – Catherine Hill Bay, Port Macquarie, Woolgoolga, Bourke, Nyngan, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Cobar, Wilcannia, Finley, Tocumwal, Wagga Wagga, Yass, Jugiong, Crookwell

SOUTH AUSTRALIA – Broken Hill, Kimba, Arno Bay, Cleve, Lucky Bay, Wallaroo, Port Pirie, Morgan, Clare, Renmark, Loxton
