Koori Media in Sydney is Live and Deadly

Sydney will soon hear the newly-licensed station Koori Radio, on
its high-powered 50KW transmitter, on FM 93.7.

Koori Radio will give voice to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Sydney. Aboriginal communities in Sydney have also recently welcomed Tunggare News – The Voice, an independent, (non-government funded) indigenous newspaper with a local focus.

These new media outlets offer advertisers exciting opportunities for
targeted communication with the indigenous communities of Sydney.

I&G Media, the nationally contracted representative for both Koori Radio and
Tungarre News, is now holding a series of briefing meetings with
government and other advertisers.

Australia’s indigenous population of 460,000 is large
– larger in fact than any single ethnic community including Italian,
Chinese, Greek or Arabic. Surprisingly, the largest proportion of the
population is in the Sydney area.

According to Census (ABS, 2001)
projections, the indigenous population of Sydney is expected to double
within the next eight years.

Nationally, Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media
comprises indigenous-owned and run radio, television and newspapers,
indigenous programming on community radio and the BRACS networks,
reaching remote communities.

In recent years there has been a rapid
expansion of Aboriginal-owned radio stations, reflecting radio’s
strength as a communication tool to indigenous communities.

I&G Media represent Indigenous and community radio stations and
newspapers, throughout Australia, and have offices in Brisbane, Sydney
and Melbourne. Services include media planning and recommendations,
media placement and production in indigenous languages.

I&G media will be holding client briefings on reaching indigenous
Australians between now and the end of 2003.
